Identifying the Slippery Slope of Liberalism

I will begin by saying that I do not consider myself to be a prophet in the Old Testament sense, but I will undertake to predict the future in this article. The basis of my prediction is not an inner sense of divine light and revelation, but a rational assessment of the motions of the past along with insights from Scripture that are meant to guide the Church away from the rocks and shoals of humanistic thought.

Any church that opens up a discussion toward unbiblical views of Creation will end in apostasy (that’s my prediction). That apostasy may not happen for a hundred years after the conversation begins, but it will indeed happen if that church continues in it. God is very jealous over His Word and well He should be. He is Truth Himself (Deut 32:4; Psa 31:5; 33:4; 100:5; ); when He speaks He is perfectly clear (although He is not always easy) (Psa 119:105, 130); His Truth is power (Hebrews 1:3); He feeds His people on Truth (Psa 19:9-10; 51:6; 119:103); He spurns the opinions and speculations of men (Isa 2:22); His Truth is His glory (Psa 45:4; 57:10); He is to be worshiped in Truth (Joshua 24:14; Psa 71:22; John 4:4); and He expects to be believed and trusted when He speaks (Psa 106:24; John 5:38). Human opinions and speculations apart from the work of the Spirit of God through the Word of God have no place on the table of discussion with the revealed truth of God’s Word in the Church.

Is this a controlling attitude and a dividing stand against other believers? I would remind those who say so that the Protestant Reformation is based on sola scriptura, the belief self-attested in Scripture that all authority on earth is derived from the revealed truth of God’s written Word – the Bible is, in fact, the Throne of God on earth. Our apologetic of Presuppositionalism is a spin-off of this very doctrine, that the Word of God is final in all matters of faith and practice. “The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God.” (WCF, ch.1, par.4) If putting forth rightly revealed Scripture is “controlling”, the Controller is clearly God. His Word is authority and power. This is to be “received” by those who believe, not argued with humanistic philosophy and speculation or compared to opinions and theories all of which is truly where cultish control is born.

Where is Christian unity to be found? It is to be found in adherence to revealed truth from Scripture under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:4-5 declares with crystal clarity, 4“There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” “One hope” and “one faith” are tied to “one Spirit”, “one Lord”, and “one God and Father” through the Truth revealed in God’s Word by His Spirit (Rom 15:4; WCF, ch.1, par. 6, sent. ii). Christian unity is to be found where believers in God’s holy Word are being taught by the Holy Spirit and are perfecting in the knowledge of the Truth which is the knowledge of God. When believers begin to turn to the opinions and innovations of men, division is born.

One thing that should be understood about theological liberals or liberalizing ministers is that they are never content to go their own way or start their own church, but are determined to change the Church to reflect their views and desires. This is precisely why orthodox churches should never open the door of “discussion” to worldly thinkers within the Church. The pressures of worldly thinking and feeling will come to dominate the “discussion”. It always begins with leveling the conversation to an equal field between orthodoxy and innovation. From there it proceeds to a liberalizing majority brought about by political maneuvers. It ends with the liberalizing faction taking control and silencing the orthodox opposition. This is exactly the way that the PCUS apostatized in the early 20th century and many other churches have followed accordingly. Western Civilization is where it is now because the history of Scripture and the account of creation were brought into question in the 18th century.

God warns His people never to enter into investigation with the ways of worldliness. Deuteronomy 12:30 says, “...beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'” Evolution is the mythology of our age and Science (so-called) is the world’s graven image along with the State and the goddess of human emotionalism. Those who give credit to chance, nature, and progress as the tools of God’s creation are ignoring the fact that the world was created by the Word of God, i.e. by Jesus Christ and there is no conversation between Jesus and any “christianized” form of evolution. There is no place for reasoning with the world; Eve tried it and you see where we are now. Taking corruption into our bosom leads to total corruption. 1 Corinthians 5:6 (Galatians 5:9; Haggai 2:10-13), “Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?”
